List of places to check out

This list contains places that have been recommended but I have not tried.  As I try them, they will be removed from the list. If they are good, they will get their post.  If they suck, they are just gone.

Nasi Lemak

Blk 221B Boon Lay Pl #01-106
Boon Lay Shopping Complex
Singapore 642221

9 pm to 5 am

Hainanese Beef Kway Teow / Bee Hoon

Address: Purvis Street

Opening hours: Breakfast and Lunch, Mon-Sat, not sure about Sunday

The original hainanese Beef Kway Teow – still the best although the price is continually escalating…

Chicken Rice at Margaret’s Drive

Address: Queenstown Hawker Center on Margaret Drive, 2nd Floor

Operating hours: Not sure – Lunch only, I think

Favourite Chicken Rice, tops Boon Tong Kee, Five-star etc anyday.  Very reasonably-priced as well.

Ser Seng Herbs (Turtle) Restaurant

Address:  Tai Thong Crescent, off MacPherson Road

Operating hours: Open till 10 pm, closed on Thursdays (I think)

Comment:

  • Great tasting  turtle soup that’s not too oily
  • Opt for the yam rice instead of white rice, if it’s available
  • Favorite of my dad and uncle
  • And no, the bloody turtles are not endangered.  They are bred on farms to be consumed like your chicken, your pigs and cows.

Roast Duck

Address: Blk 148 Silat Ave, #01-14, Jalan Bukit Merah

Operating hours: Unknown

Comments:

This stall used to be Lavender Road, near Serangoon Road, opposite Kwong Wai Shiu Hospital*.

It closed earlier this year and I thought all was lost and had been trying all sorts of roast duck recommendations online with none of them being quite good enough.  To my surprise, last night, my dad received an sms from these folks about their new stall at the above address.

*Apparently someone taken over the same spot selling roast duck as well.  I have not tried them and probably not likely to.

Ah Wah Bak Kut Teh

Breakfast & Lunch

Address: PSA Tanjong Pagar Complex#01-05/07, 7 Keppel Road
Opening hours: 7am to 3pm; closed on Mondays

Dinner & Supper (Standard not as good as the above)

Address: Junction of Havelock Road and Havelock Link
Opening hours: Evening till early morning

I am actually not sure whether they are really related – My dad tells they are, so in the absence of better information, I am grouping them together for now.  I find them a much better alternative to the overrated Ng Ah Siow on Rangoon Road and Founder’s at Balestier – I hardly visit them even though I live within walking distance of these two supposedly famous Bak Kut Teh joints.
